Across The Universe

Last week the world (including Google) celebrated the life of John Lennon, Oct 9th marking the 70th anniversary of his birth. ‘Across the Universe’ is one of my most loved Lennon-penned songs, and this Phosphorescent cover is surprisingly amazing.

Ashes To Ashes

I heard about, and immediately purchased this epic David Bowie Tribute Album featuring some pretty impressive covers by the likes of Duran Duran, Devendra Banhart, Vivian Girls, A Place to Bury Strangers and more. Warpaint’s haunting take on ‘Ashes To Ashes’ is a standout.

Slow Hands

You may know 18 year old Harlem rapper Miss Banks (aka Azealia) from the Nike 1Love series spotlighting each of the 5 boroughs in New York, or from her verse-dropping on Major Lazer EPs.  Not only can she freestyle, but she’s got a pretty crazy-good singing voice to boot. Album out later this year on XL.

Lately

Two artists both tipped as ‘on the rise’ – Canadian bedroom act Foxes In Fiction lay their lo-fi brand of folk/pop on this stunning cover of ‘Lately’ by, also Canadian bedroom act, Memoryhouse. The original can be found on Memoryhouse’s debut EP The Years which comes highly recommend if you’re into ethereal dream-pop and wistful chill. Yes? No?

Held The Hand

Dear Stone’s Throw Records,
Do you remember the time I ordered 3 copies of Mayer Hawthorne’s ‘Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out’ on  heart-shaped vinyl? Do you remember that is got “lost in transit”. Well, I’m still really sad about it. Anyway, this Mayer Hawthorne cover of Held The Hand is lovely. Just saying.
