Stay Away (Nirvana Cover)

Easily the best cover from Spin Magazine’s recent Nirvana tribute album ‘Newermind‘, Charles Bradley & The Menahan Street Band‘s soul-heavy version of ‘Stay Away’ tops offerings from other big-hitters including Surfer Blood, Midnight Juggies and EMA.

True Love Ways

Anyone else tired of tribute albums yet? Feels like it’s been done to death but then you get a track listing that reads “The Black Keys, Julian Casablancas, Patti Smith, Modest Mouse, Paul McCartney, Lou Reed…” and it’s hard not to want to start Youtubing the tracks and posting them all over Facebook. Plus Buddy Holly is awesome and you can’t argue with that.

Say My Name

The internet’s best art blog Booooooom has started a side project called the Cover Song Archive which is where we uncovered this gem. The Cheapmunks, from what we gather, are two kind of cheesy/dorky/extremely talented Pakistani girls fusing an urban desi sound with classic pop. Can’t speak for the rest of their music but at least they look like babes.

Artist / Jamie XX+Yasmin
Track / Touch Me
Cover / Rui Da Silva

Touch Me

This might very well be my favourite cover since Dr. Dog took on ‘Heart It Races’. Jamie XX and Yasmin first performed a live cover / re-edit /remix of Rui Da Silva’s classic track ‘Touch Me’ during their infamous Boiler Room set a few weeks back, and later lay down this studio version exclusively for BBC6. Who can say no to steel drums?

I Can Hear Music

Originally performed by the Ronettes in 1966 after being written by the hit-making dream-team Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector, ‘I Can Hear Music’ was later covered by The Beach Boys in 1969. Their version soon became more popularised than the original, charting in the Top 10 for many countries around the world.
